ES Thursday special · November 5, 2026 · № 45½
Wednesday’s note said the save at 7,667 had to hold, that a close back under it undid the rally, and that fills while the index slices through a line don’t count. Thursday was that sentence in full. ES opened at 7,737, broke the first buy at 7,714 in the first hour, took the pivot, the defensive line and the election-night low in the next two, and closed at 7,353. 392 pts top to bottom, the widest session of 2026 and more than 4 times its 20-day average range, on 3.3 million contracts against a 10-day average near 1.9 million.
The S&P 500 lost 4.4%, its worst day since April 2025. The Nasdaq 100 lost 6.4%. The chip index lost 11%. VIX went from 16.6 to 28.2, a 70% jump, the third-biggest one-day rise in the index’s history, behind February 2018 and December 2024.
And here’s the number that matters more than any of those: 429 of the 500 stocks in the index fell, 108 of them by more than 5%, and the count of new 52-week lows was zero. Not low. Zero. Two-thirds of the index is still holding its own short-term trend. Staples fell 0.8%, utilities 0.7%, communications 0.6%. Semis fell 11% and the memory names 16% to 22%.
That’s not what a market-wide washout looks like. It’s what a liquidation of one trade looks like, sold through the index because that’s the fastest way out.
Below the line: Wednesday’s map graded, what the hedge paid, the score, who sold and why, the new levels off the 200-day, the odds from 44 days like this one, and three defined-risk trades built where the asymmetry actually is tonight.
