Wednesday was the move. September CPI came in hot where it counts: core up 0.3% on the month against 0.2% expected, 2.6% on the year. ES dropped 56 pts in the 30 minutes after the print, and the cash open sold again. It was a one-way trend day. It settled 7,770.25, down 85. The S&P 500 lost 1.1%, its worst day since July. Odds of a hike at the Oct 28 Fed meeting jumped from about 20% to about 44%.

Under the hood it was a rotation. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4.3% for its 6th straight loss. Healthcare rose 2.5% and staples 2.2%. The equal-weight S&P is down less than half a percent on the week. Tech is the exception: the equal-weight tech fund (RSPT), where every tech stock counts the same, fell 3.4% and is rolling over.

Our long came off on Wednesday’s close. Sunday’s note said a close under the extreme takes the starter out, and we closed under it by 5 pts.

That’s what a leader looks like when it’s digesting a run. The best growth stocks rarely go straight up. They run, they rest, and the rest is where the next leg gets built. The job is to own the right ones before it starts, and to be picky about which ones. Of the 10, we’re keeping 5.

How we pick leaders

We built our own screen for this, and it reads in the same order we trade. Each name has to pass 5 checks, and the order matters. A great chart on a weak business is a trade we’ll skip.

1. The business. Revenue and profits growing for real, and margins holding. If the numbers don’t back the story, nothing else counts.

2. The theme. Where new money is heading before it’s crowded. This week that’s AI moving up the stack, a quiet healthcare rotation, and the physical build-out.

3. The chart. Already leading. Each name has beaten the S&P 500 by a wide margin over 3 months and sits near its high in a clean uptrend. Then the pause: a week that closed where it opened, and closed strong inside its range.

4. The crowd. Who’s still left to buy. We look at what the options market is pricing, where analysts sit against the price, and how the big funds are positioned. The best setups are the ones the crowd hasn’t caught up to.

5. The trade. Only now do we pick the structure. When options price less movement than the stock is making, we use call spreads. Otherwise we own shares.

And all of it sits under the index. The S&P is at a record and the trend is up, so leaders get the benefit of the doubt this week.

The 10-year touched its highest yield since 2002 midweek, then eased to about 5.24% after a strong auction. Stocks shrugged it off for the second week in a row. That’s the market telling you 5% yields are a headline now, not a reason to sell.

The crowd still isn’t chasing. AAII bears fell to 39% from 46.5%, but put buying hasn’t dried up and VIX closed at 14.84. Hedge funds aren’t in it either. Fundamental long/short funds are running about 46% net long, their lowest since the April 2025 lows, while the S&P sits at a record. A rally this many people doubt still has buyers waiting on the sidelines. This week’s catalysts each answer one question. The banks report Tuesday and tell us whether the rally can broaden. CPI on Wednesday is a vote on December’s hike. TSMC (TSM) on Thursday is a vote on the AI buildout.

The plan’s simple: stay long, ride the trend, and buy the dip at the line instead of chasing the open.

The breakout that wasn’t

It was a little after 10:00 ET and ES had just pushed through the prior day’s high. Clean candle, momentum on the screen, chat lighting up. I bought it.

Twenty minutes later I was out for a loss, and price was back in the middle of yesterday’s range like the breakout never happened.

Afterward the reasons were all sitting there. The push came on light volume, into a thin spot on the profile where nobody had done business the day before. Price was stretched well above VWAP. Dealers were long gamma, so hedgers sold into every rally. CPI was the next morning, so the real money wasn’t going to commit until it printed. Every piece said “test, not trend.” I was only looking at the candle.

This post is about reading the rest of it. We’ll start with how price actually moves, tick by tick, in a market where most of the trading is machines trading with other machines. Then we’ll build the toolkit we use on ES every week: volume profile, VWAP and volume. Then we’ll stack those with the things that tell you when the map is about to change: options positioning, the event calendar and the systematic flows that switch on and off at known levels.

No jargon left unexplained. If you’re new, read it top to bottom. If you run a book, skip to the confluence section and the 5 reads.

How price actually moves

Forget the chart for a minute. Under every ES candle is an order book: a ladder of prices, each with orders waiting on it.

• Bids sit below the current price. These are buyers waiting to buy if price comes down to them.

• Offers sit above. These are sellers waiting to sell if price comes up to them.

• Orders that wait on the ladder are limit orders. They supply liquidity.

• Orders that cross the spread and trade right now are market orders. They take liquidity. These are the people in a hurry.

Price only moves when someone in a hurry eats through the orders waiting on one side. A big market buy order lifts every offer at the current price, then the next price up, then the next. Each level it clears is a tick higher. That’s all a rally is, mechanically.

Two things follow, and they matter for everything else in this post:

1. Every trade has a buyer and a seller. When someone says “there were more buyers than sellers,” that’s never literally true. What they mean is the buyers were more aggressive. They were the ones crossing the spread. Volume tells you how much traded. Aggression tells you who was pushing.

2. How far price moves depends on how much is waiting. The same order that moves ES 3 ticks in a deep book can move it 6 or more in a thin one. When the book is thin, price moves fast on very little. Those are the air pockets that blow through stops.

A market run by machines

On any given day, most of the orders hitting the ES book come from software, not from a person clicking a button. A lot of what you see on the chart is algos trading with other algos. Here’s who they are:

• Market makers post bids and offers all day and earn the spread. When volatility jumps, they widen out or pull their orders. That’s why the book goes thin exactly when you need it.

• Execution algos work big orders for funds. A pension buying a large block doesn’t hit the market all at once. Its algo slices the order into thousands of small pieces through the day and is graded on how close it gets to VWAP (more on that below).

• High-speed traders react to news, data and other orders in milliseconds.

• Systematic funds (trend followers, volatility-targeting funds, risk parity) buy and sell by formula when trend or volatility crosses a threshold.

• Options dealers hedge the options the rest of the market buys and sells, and their hedging can either dampen moves or amplify them.

The humans are still there. Long-only funds, pods hedging their books, prop traders, retail. But they mostly act through machines.

This is why levels work at all. It isn’t magic. Thousands of algos are programmed to watch the same reference points: yesterday’s high and low, VWAP, the prior day’s value area, big options strikes, round numbers. When price reaches one of them, a lot of code wakes up at the same moment. Some of it is set to buy, some to sell, some to pull its orders. That’s why price so often stalls, snaps back or rips right at a level. The reaction is mechanical.

The session has a rhythm too. The open is heavy as overnight orders get matched. 10:00 ET data hits, and algos reprice in milliseconds. Lunch is quiet and the book is thin. Fed days add a 2:00 pm spike. The last hour is the busiest: dealers re-hedge, volatility-targeting funds rebalance, and at 3:50 pm the exchange publishes the closing imbalance, which pulls in another wave of orders. A move at 12:30 and the same move at 3:45 are not the same signal.

The practical takeaway: read price at the reference points, at the times the machines are active. Everything in between is mostly noise.

The map: volume profile

A normal chart shows price against time. A volume profile shows how much traded at each price.

Here’s how it’s built. Every time a contract trades, put a mark next to the price it traded at. Do that for every trade in a day or a week, then stack the marks sideways. You get a histogram on the side of the chart: long bars where a lot of business got done, short bars where almost nothing traded.

That shape is a map of where buyers and sellers agreed on price and where they didn’t. You only need 5 terms to read it.

Notice how this connects to the order book. A fat shelf is where lots of orders have been waiting, so price takes effort to push through. A thin gap is where very few were waiting, so the same push goes much further. Fat is where the market rests. Thin is where it travels.

Timeframe matters. A daily profile tells you about today. A weekly profile shows where the bigger money has done business, and those zones hold up better. We use the weekly as the map and the daily to time entries.

VWAP: the day’s scoreboard

VWAP stands for volume-weighted average price. Take every trade since the session opened, weight each price by how many contracts traded there, and average it. The result is one line on your chart: the average price everyone has paid today.

It matters because of who uses it. Remember the execution algos slicing big orders for funds? Most of them are graded against VWAP. A fund that bought below VWAP got a good fill. One that paid above it overpaid. So a huge amount of size gets worked near that line every day, and the machines doing it watch it constantly.

How we read it on ES:

• Above VWAP and holding = buyers in control for the session. On a trend day, pullbacks to VWAP get bought and price rarely closes below it.

• Below VWAP and holding = sellers in control. Same thing upside down.

• Crossing back and forth = a range day. VWAP acts like a magnet and edge trades work better than breakouts.

• The bands. Many platforms draw lines 1 and 2 standard deviations above and below VWAP. On a range day, a tag of the 2σ band means price is stretched, and fading it back toward VWAP is a reasonable trade. On a trend day, price can ride the 1σ band for hours, so don’t fade it.

• A reclaim or a loss of VWAP after a failed move is often the first sign the day has changed character.

There’s also anchored VWAP. Instead of starting the average at today’s open, you start it at a moment that mattered: an FOMC decision, a big low, a gap. That line is the average cost of everyone who traded since that event. When price comes back to it, those traders are at breakeven, and they tend to either defend it or bail out. Either way, something happens there.

The simple way to hold these together: VWAP is the fair price of the day. The profile is the fair price of the week. When the 2 line up at the same spot, pay attention.

Volume: reading the vote

The profile shows where business got done in the past. Volume shows how much is getting done right now. Think of each bar as an election and volume as turnout. A move on heavy turnout is a mandate. A move on light turnout is a rumor.

The cleanest way to read it is effort versus result. Volume is the effort. How far price travels is the result. They should match. When they don’t, that mismatch is the information.

• Big effort, big result = mandate. Heavy volume and a wide bar that closes near its extreme. Real participation. Respect it.

• Big effort, small result = absorption. Heavy volume but the bar goes nowhere. Someone big is soaking up every order with resting limit orders. This often marks a turn.

• Small effort, big result = vacuum. Price travels far on light volume, usually through a thin zone. Fine to ride, but don’t trust it to hold until real volume shows up.

• Small effort, small result = nothing. Don’t force a trade.

2 habits keep this honest:

1. Compare volume to its normal for that time of day. ES volume is naturally heavy at the open and close and light at lunch (look back at the machine tape). A breakout at 2x the normal volume for 10:30 is a different animal than one at 0.6x. This ratio is called relative volume, or RVOL.

2. Watch where the heavy volume prints inside the bar. If the heaviest trading in a breakout bar happens at the top and price holds there, buyers are winning. If it happens at the top and price falls back, buyers got trapped up there, and that trapped volume becomes resistance next time.

The opening trade was a vacuum: small effort, into a thin zone, with nobody new showing up. The tape was telling me. I wasn’t asking it.

Why ES is built for this

These tools work best where the auction is truly 2-way, and ES is about as 2-way as markets get. Pods hedge their stock books with it. Long-only funds use it to adjust exposure fast. Dealers hedge SPX options with it. Systematic funds rebalance through it. It trades nearly around the clock. With that many players needing the opposite side, price spends real time building value, and the edges of value mean something.

A single stock is different. It reprices on information: an earnings print, a guide cut, a downgrade. When fair value itself moves, yesterday’s profile stops mattering. If you trade stocks, these tools still help with timing once your fundamental case is set, but on ES they’re close to the main event. That’s why our work starts there, and why the ES read is the risk dial for everything else: when ES is accepting higher prices with supportive flows, it’s a better environment to press longs anywhere. When it’s rejecting at the edges, that’s where you hedge or stop adding.

Confluence: what we stack on top of the map

Profile, VWAP and volume tell you where the market agrees and whether it’s accepting a new price. They don’t tell you why, or when the agreement is about to break. A level on its own is a hypothesis. We trust it when other inputs point the same way at the same price.

The best trades show up when 3 or 4 of these line up at one price. A value area high that sits at a big call strike, above a flattening VWAP, in a long gamma tape, the day before CPI, is a very different level from the same price with nothing behind it.

5 reads on the ES tape

Every read below asks the same question at a different spot on the map: is the market accepting this price, or rejecting it? Each one comes with the context where it works best, because the same pattern means different things in different regimes.

1. Look above and fail

What you see: Price pokes above the value area high or yesterday’s high, on light volume, and the next bars close back inside value. Often it’s stretched to the upper VWAP band as it does it.

What it means: The market tested a higher price and nobody new wanted to pay it. The algos that sell at the reference point sold, and no aggressive buyer stepped in. Rejected.

The trade: Short on the first close back inside value. Stop a few ticks above the poke high. First target VWAP or the POC, second target the far side of value. The same trade works upside down for a failed look below value.

Best when: Long gamma, quiet tape, no big event until after the close.

2. Acceptance outside value

What you see: Price breaks out of value and stays there. Volume expands on the break, VWAP turns up behind it, and new trading starts building above the old value high.

What it means: The market found a new fair price. The old range is history.

The trade: Don’t chase the first push. Wait for a pullback to the old value high or to VWAP. If it holds on lighter volume, get long. Stop back inside value. Target the next fat shelf or naked POC above. A simple acceptance test: 2 straight 30-minute closes outside value. One is a probe. Two is a decision.

Best when: Right after a major event, or when dealers are short gamma and the break agrees with the flows.

3. The thin-zone express lane

What you see: Price breaks into a low-volume node with a pickup in volume.

What it means: There are very few resting orders in there, so price tends to travel straight to the next fat shelf.

The trade: Enter on the break into the thin zone. Target the far edge, where the next fat shelf starts. Stop just back on the other side. These are quick trades. Take them, bank them, move on.

Best when: Short gamma, or a systematic trigger sits right at the edge of the zone. In long gamma these moves often stall halfway as dealer hedging leans against them.

4. Back into value

What you see: ES opens outside yesterday’s value area, then trades back inside and holds there for at least a full 30-minute period.

What it means: The move outside got rejected, and the market is going back to the old agreement.

The trade: Trade toward the far side of value, with VWAP and the POC as checkpoints. Stop outside the edge it came back through. It works best on quiet days and gets run over on trend days.

Best when: No-catalyst days, long gamma, open interest clustered near the POC.

5. Naked POC magnet

What you see: An old POC sitting untouched near current price.

What it means: It was the fairest price of an earlier session and the market hasn’t been back. Those prices tend to get revisited.

The trade: Use it as a target, not an entry. If you’re already in a trade heading that way, it’s a logical place to take profits. If price tags it with big effort and little result, the move is probably done.

Best when: Heading into options expiration, or when the naked POC lines up with a big strike. Then you have 2 magnets at one price.

Putting it on a trade

A good read is worth nothing if the trade structure can blow you up. Here’s how we turn a read into a trade where the worst case is known before you click.

1. Context first. Know the fundamental tide, which events land inside your holding window, the gamma regime, and where systematic flows switch. That tells you which of the 5 reads to expect today.

2. Then the map. Mark the weekly value area high, low and POC, the nearest thin zone above and below, any naked POCs in range, and where VWAP and any important anchored VWAP sit. If you can’t draw it in 5 minutes, it’s too cluttered.

3. Then wait. Let the first hour show you whether price is accepting or rejecting the edges. The market picks the read, not you.

4. Stop where the idea is wrong, not where the pain is. Every read has a natural invalidation: back inside value, back through the thin zone, above the failed poke, back under VWAP. If price gets there, the auction told you something new.

5. Size off the stop. Decide what you’ll risk first, then divide by the distance to the stop. A wide structural stop means a smaller position.

6. Defined risk only. On the options side, a debit spread aimed at the next fat shelf or naked POC fits these reads well. The max loss is what you paid, and the target is a real place on the map. Treat it as a 0-5 day trade and manage the exit at your level. No naked short options. A read can be right and still get run over by a headline.

Learning moment: patience in a machine market

The hardest part isn’t spotting the patterns. It’s waiting for the answer.

In a market run by algos, the first move through a level is often a machine probing for orders, not a decision. Breakouts on light volume exist because people buy the first print without checking turnout. Waiting 1 or 2 bars for acceptance is most of the edge, and it costs you nothing except the feeling of missing out.

A few habits that help:

• Say the read out loud before you trade. “Price is above value on 2x volume, holding above VWAP. That’s acceptance.” If you can’t finish the sentence, you don’t have a trade.

• Grade the read, not the P&L. A correct read that got stopped is a good trade. A lucky win on a bad read is a bad one.

• Stop trading the middle. Most damage happens inside value, around the POC and VWAP on a range day, where nothing gets decided. The edges are where the information is.

This is also where the work is heading. Our trader AI brain in the backend already runs these checks at every level: is volume expanding, is price holding outside value, which side of VWAP is it on, is it travelling a thin zone, and do the gamma regime, the event calendar and the flows agree. Machines are good at asking the same question 1,000 times without getting bored or scared. Your job shifts to understanding why the read works, so you know when to trust it and when the context says stand aside.

Pulling it together: how we build the week

Go back to that breakout above the prior high. Most of what would have kept me out was known before the open: the thin zone above, long gamma, CPI the next morning. The light volume and the stretch above VWAP showed up in real time. The problem wasn’t missing information. It was having it scattered across 5 screens and putting it together too late.

That’s the job LobWedge Research does every week. We take all of it and turn it into one plan you can trade:

2. The calendar. Which events land inside the week, and what each one is really a vote on.

A real week, start to finish

Here is Week 40, the week of Sep 28, replayed on the levels we actually published. Nothing redrawn after the fact.

The whole post is in this one chart:

• Monday, a miss. ES closed 7,746.25, under the 7,767 pivot. Tuesday confirmed it, and our starter long from 7,707 came out. We said so in the next note.

• Wednesday, calendar flow. Quarter-end rebalancing pushed price 40 pts in the last hour with no news. The 7,718 defensive line held on every daily close anyway.

• Thursday, the buy. Price touched the 7,687 buy area at 11 a.m. The low was 7,672.75, so 14 pts of heat, and it closed 7,725.

• Friday, the event. Payrolls came in at +29k. ES ran to 7,810.25 and closed 7,776.50, back over the pivot. The position from 7,687 was up 89 pts.

On Sunday’s map, 3 of 8 levels traded, and on Wednesday’s, 4 of 6. Not every level gets tested, and not every trade works. The point is that the plan said where we would buy, where we were wrong, and why, before the week started.

How we keep ourselves honest

Anyone can post a winning chart after the fact. Here are the rules we hold ourselves to instead:

• Every published level gets graded against the regular-session tape: touched or not, held or not.

• No backfill. Scoring started Aug 7, 2026. We don’t rebuild an older record, because a history we could pick the inputs for is worth nothing.

• Misses come first. The scorecard leads with what didn’t work, like the Monday stop above.

• No hit rate until the sample earns it. We publish a reaction rate only after 40+ touches, with its error band and compared against a coin flip. If it isn’t better than 50/50, we’ll say so.

Sunday asked for a dip first. It didn’t come. ES dipped to 7,760.25 Monday morning, 15 under the pivot, and that was the low of the week. Monday hit the first scale at 7,837. Tuesday ran to 7,897.50, 9 shy of the contract high, and the S&P 500 printed its first record close since mid-August. ES is up 74 from Friday.

Wednesday was the rate leg. The 10-year traded 5.35% before 9 a.m. Eastern, the highest since 2002, and the 30-year made a 24-year high. ES fell 82 from Tuesday’s high to 7,815.75, then the 10-year auction and the Fed minutes took the edge off. The minutes said most officials expect one more hike this year and want to take each meeting as it comes. October hike odds sit near 20%. ES closed 7,850.25.

Underneath, the index held and the rest didn’t. The Russell lost 1.3% Wednesday and the Dow 0.7%, with Caterpillar down almost 6% on a downgrade. The S&P lost 0.2% and Micron (MU) gained 4%. Same 2 markets as Sunday.

The flush Wednesday’s note expected came on Thursday. ES broke the week’s low, traded 7,672.75 at 11 a.m. Eastern, closed 7,725 and kept going. Friday’s payrolls printed 29,000 jobs against about 90,000 expected, unemployment held 4.2%, and ES ran 137 pts off Thursday’s low before settling the week at 7,776.50.

October’s hike is mostly gone from the price. The odds were near 70% on Monday and closed the week under 20%. December is still priced as likely, and the 10-year touched 5.34% Thursday, a 24-year high, before easing to about 5.28%.

Underneath, it’s still 2 markets. Nasdaq futures made a contract high Friday and rose 0.4% on the week. The Dow lost 1.3%. The equal-weight S&P 500 posted its 7th straight weekly loss. Citadel Securities’ October note put the gap in one number: 4 stocks made more than 200% of the S&P’s third-quarter gain, and the rest of the index subtracted.

We’ve seen this week’s shape 51 times since 2020: a week that undercuts the prior week’s low and closes near the top of its own range. The next week traded above this week’s high 88% of the time, against 64% for any week. The usual dip first ran about 0.9%, which lands right where the buy sits.

The plan: long, half size, the starter from Thursday’s buy still on. Buy the dip into the map, take the first target on the way up. One close takes it away, and it’s in the levels.

The number to watch is theo avg: what you paid, minus what you’ve banked, divided by the lots you still hold. Once theo avg is under your stop, the trade can’t lose.

The setup ($50k, MES, max loss $1,000)

• Buy 3 MES at 7,718. Risk to the 7,659 trend line is $885.

• Sell 2 at 7,767. Keep 1 as a runner.

• Rebuy 2 every time 7,718 trades again.

• Add at 7,687 only with banked money.

• Wrong is a close under 7,687, or 7,659 intraday.

What happened

The first trip on Tuesday morning put theo avg under the line. By Thursday’s flush to 7,672, the position was paid for. The week finished +$2,210 on $885 of risk, with $1,205 locked even if the trend line broke.

The asymmetry is in the runners

The trading lots risk 59 points to make 49. Their job is to fund the runner. Once you’re green, a runner costs no fresh risk and is worth +$845 per MES if 7,887 prints. Use banked money to add runners, then scale them out at 7,847, 7,875 and 7,887.

Educational. Fills at the level, no slippage or commissions. Not a recommendation to trade.

Underneath, the Fed story turned. October hike odds were about 73% on Monday. Williams said Tuesday there’s no urgency to raise rates, job openings came in soft at 7.08M against 7.23M, and Wednesday’s core PCE printed 0.2% for August against 0.3% expected, 3.0% on the year against 3.3%. The odds sit near 35% tonight and the 2-year fell to about 4.84%. Most of the PCE miss came from a change in how the government measures a few services, and the bond market noticed. The long end kept climbing, with the 30-year near 5.58%.

So the front end says the Fed is close to done and the long end doesn’t believe inflation is. Stocks are stuck between the two, and you can see it in the indexes. September closed with Nasdaq futures up about 3%, the S&P off 0.6%, the Dow down 4.5% and the Russell down 5.4%. The leaders held the index up. Everything that needs lower long rates sold.

The last hour Wednesday was the quarter-end rebalance Sunday’s note flagged. ES fell about 40 pts in the final 30 minutes on no news. Micron reported after the bell, beat and raised, and the stock barely moved.

Three things before Monday.

The dip we planned for showed up and it was small. ES fell 140 pts from Tuesday’s high to 7,707 on Thursday, landed on the one mid-September level never revisited, and closed the week at 7,805.75, up 81. That’s the whole soft patch so far: 2 sessions, bought. Price sits 62 pts over its 20-day and 80 over its 50-day, with the last 4 closes inside 7,767 to 7,848.

Rates are the ceiling. The 10-year closed 5.16%, a 19-year high, with better than 70% odds of another hike priced for October. The index rallied anyway, on oil. Underneath, 3 stocks in 10 hold their short-term trend and the equal-weight index fell on a week the cap-weighted one rose 1.3%. The leaders again.

We’ve seen this shape 117 times in our own 10 years of ES: a week that tests the 20-day, holds it, and closes in the top half of its range. The next week traded above the prior week’s high 84% of the time, against 64% for any week, and closed under the 20-day 10%, against 33%. The coil usually resolves up. It usually dips first, about 0.8%, which is where 7,767 comes in.

The plan: long, half size, the starter from 7,707 still on. Buy dips into 7,767, wait for 7,837 to close, take 7,875 and 7,887 if it does. One close takes the trade away; it’s below.

Last week, on the map

Monday went straight through 7,747, where Sunday expected the first rejection, and paid the 7,840 upper target by mid-afternoon; we reduced there, about 133 pts on that piece. Wednesday’s hot PMI put the 10-year at 5.11% and ES back inside the range, and Wednesday’s note re-marked the map with 7,718 as the re-buy line and 7,687 as the bigger add. Thursday’s pre-market hit 7,718, printed 7,707.25 on the naked level from 2 weeks earlier, and that was the low. The low printed at 5 a.m. Pacific, so most readers didn’t get it. The 7,687 add never filled. Friday closed 7,805.75, back over 7,779 and 7,793.

3 of 7 Sunday levels traded. The starter from 7,707.25 is open, up 98. The score went 0 Sunday, plus 1 after Wednesday, and the model prints plus 0.5 on Friday’s close: neutral, in the band where it doesn’t pick a side.

The learning moment. The re-buy printed pre-market and most of us missed it. That’s not a failure of the plan; the level held to the tick and the structure did its job. Missing a fill costs one entry. Chasing the bounce 60 pts higher costs the edge. The next entry is already written down, 7,767 to 7,780 on a touch. Time in the position at the right levels beats timing the low, and the legends each say it: Jones sizes for being wrong and lets the trend work, Druckenmiller waits for the setup and then presses it, Cohen keeps the loss small and the win big, Litowitz sizes so he can sleep through the print he can’t watch. Most of this is mental. A resting order at a level is an order you don’t have to be awake for, which is why the desk is building the automation: the map is keyed in Sunday, the orders wait at the lines, and the 5 a.m. print fills whether you’re up or not.

The framework

Every note runs the same chain, top down: what kind of market, what works in it, how big, where and when, what changes it. Each answer sets up the next, and it’s the chain the automation is built on.

What kind of market. A range with an uptrend under it and rates as the ceiling. The 10-year at 5.16% and the 30-year at 5.49% cap the multiple; they don’t end the trend, because earnings are still growing 25% to 30% and the multiple already came down from 23 to 19. Institutional buying by our gauge is in the top tenth of its range and rose every session since Monday, while 31% of stocks hold their short-term trend. Big money buying a market most stocks don’t confirm is a range with a bid, and that’s been the last 4 weeks.

What works in it. Buying leaders at their own averages and the index at its levels. Not breakouts, not laggards. The leaders are in 4 places, AI hardware and semis, security software, life-science tools, and the 2 platforms with a monetization story; the spots are below. What doesn’t work is anything that needs the broadening: equal-weight, small caps, utilities, financials, and the refiners we cut Wednesday.

How big. Half. The weakest dial sets size, and participation is the weakest dial. A neutral score doesn’t pick a direction, so the map does, and it’s long above 7,767.

Where and when. The levels below, bought on touches in the day session. The overnight is where headlines land; the day session is where they get decided. Rule 2 in the plan has the number.

What changes it. 2 prices on the index, 7,837 up and 7,767 down. 1 number on rates, 5.25% on the 10-year. 1 print on the leaders, Micron Wednesday. That’s the watchlist.

Levels

Trend first. ES is 62 pts over the 20-day at 7,743 and 80 over the 50-day at 7,726, and the 200-day is about 400 pts under anything on the map. All 3 are under price and rising.

The options market prices a weekly move of about 96 pts either way, 1.2%, so the band is 7,710 to 7,902. The band floor sits on the defensive line and the ceiling sits under the contract high, so the map and the options market agree on where the week lives.

7,887. Upper target. The second hurdle before new highs; the contract high at 7,906 sits behind it.

7,875. First target. The first hurdle above last week’s high. First scale.

7,847. Sellers’ line. Last week’s high, sold 3 times. A held close over it is a new leg.

7,837. THE PIVOT. Where Monday through Wednesday did its business, 32 pts over Friday’s close. A held close over it is the upgrade.

7,767. First hurdle. Thursday’s close and the swing low. Bullish above, cautious under. The add is a touch of 7,767 to 7,780 while the closes hold above it.

7,718. Defensive line. First support, the bottom of last week’s value, the band floor.

7,687. The extreme. The big area from the last 3 weeks. A close under it says a weaker market.

7,659. The trend line. Beyond the band. A close under it questions the uptrend since June.

What changes the score: a close over 7,837 that holds a second session, or a close under 7,767 that holds a second session.

The plan

Long, half size, the starter from 7,707 on. Buy the dip, wait for the close.

One. The add is 7,767 to 7,780 on a touch, while the closes hold above 7,767. The coil sample says the normal dip from a Friday close like this one is about 0.8%, which lands on the 20-day just under the add zone, so the dip is the base case. If a close prints under 7,767, stop adding and let 7,718 and 7,687 decide.

Two. Don’t chase the overnight. In the last 30 sessions the overnight made all of the net gain, up 56 pts, and the day session gave back 124; the day went against the overnight 57% of the time. Most of what’s moved this market lately arrived as a “sources say” headline out of Washington, on Iran, tariffs or the Fed, and those land overnight. A gap up into 7,847 on a headline is where we wait; the day-session dip into 7,767 is where we buy.

Three. The closes decide size. A held close over 7,837 is the upgrade: add back to half for 7,875 and 7,887. A held close under 7,767 is the downgrade: the starter comes out, the lean goes flat, and we watch 7,718 and 7,687 for the next buyer rather than shorting into them.

The odds, from the 117-week sample: closes above last week’s high 50%, stays in the range 40%, closes under the 20-day 10%. The first 2 are long. Only the third costs anything, and the 7,767 close keeps it small.

The sizing chain, once: a neutral score with weak participation is half size. Every position starts as a starter until a level holds. Entries are touches. Exits and score changes are closes. The ratios are the framework; the dollars are yours.

The options

Front-week premium is fair, not cheap: 1.2% priced against a 1.8% range last week and a 2.6% median week in our data. We own it rather than sell it, defined risk, one structure per case.

The coil-up case. SPX call spread, 7,750/7,825 for Friday’s expiry, about 7,812 and 7,887 on ES, so the top strike sits on the upper target. A 29-pt debit for a 75-pt spread, $2,900 at risk for $4,600 at best. It replaces the futures add. The spot: an ES touch of 7,767 to 7,780 while the closes hold above 7,767.

The break case. SPX put spread, 7,700/7,650, about 7,762 and 7,712 on ES. An 11.6-pt debit for a 50-pt spread, $1,160 at risk for $3,840 at best. The spot: an ES close under 7,767 that holds. Directional once the starter is out, not a hedge beside it.

One bet each, never both at once.

Micron (MU), Wednesday after the close. Fundamentals first. $90B of revenue in the last 12 months, 3.5x a year ago, a 56% net margin, and $44 of earnings per share on a $1,082 stock: 24x trailing, 7x next year’s number, 44 of 48 analysts at Buy with a $1,515 target. That’s not a stock you bet against. The debate isn’t the quarter; it’s whether an 80% operating margin is a cycle peak or the new normal, and only Wednesday’s guide on memory pricing into 2027 answers that. Which is why beats get sold here: our file has MU beating on all 8 of its last reports and closing lower the next day 6 of 8, median move 7.4% against 8.6% priced this week. The number was never the question.

So the view is own it, and the execution is after the print. If it sells the beat, the dip toward its own average near 994 is the entry. If it gaps up on the guide, the leaders book pays. The only structure that fits the view is insurance: if you hold MU into the print, a 1,060/980 put spread for Friday, about a 24-pt debit for 80 wide, covers the beat-and-fade at a known cost. If you don’t hold it, you don’t need the spread; you need the dip.

The crowd

Two tapes: 53% of Nasdaq 100 names are above their short-term trend against 31% of the S&P 500. Dealers are long options at the 80th percentile of the year, the mechanism behind 4 weeks of range: they sell rallies and buy dips. Their cushion runs out just under 7,767; below it moves extend, which is why 7,718 and 7,687 sit close together.

Hedging is light: equity put/call 0.62, VIX 14.9 in the bottom tenth of its range, the October future at 17.5 still carrying the risk a month out. Buy ratings cover 59.9% of the S&P 500, the highest month-end share since at least 2010. The crowd already owns the leaders, which is why the buys go at the averages, not the highs.

The bond market is nervous and the stock market isn’t. The MOVE index, the VIX of Treasuries, closed 96, the top 5% of its year and up 38% in 20 sessions, while the VIX sits in its bottom 10%. Our 10 years say a high MOVE doesn’t change where ES goes; it widens how far the bad week can go: the bad-tenth week runs -3.6% against -2.1% when bond vol is calm. The sharper case, bond vol up 30% in a month with the VIX still asleep, has happened 11 times: the next week was down 8 of 11, the VIX jumped 20% or more in 4, and a month later the index was higher 8 of 11 with a median gain of 4%. Dip first, then the turn. Same answer as the coil sample, and one more reason to buy the dip with defined risk instead of selling premium into it.

The leaders, and where to buy them

Every name here passes 4 checks in this order: the earnings (is the business getting better), the trend (is price above its own averages), the crowd (who already owns it), and only then the structure. The buy price is the stock’s own 20-day average or the low that held. Nothing gets bought at a high.

Semis. Micron’s print decides the group and nothing here gets bought before it. The semiconductor fund (SMH) 606.56; the spot is 594, Wednesday’s low. Nvidia (NVDA) 225 sits on its 20-day; the spot is 222. Dell (DELL) held 534 and that stays the spot. AMD at 630 is 100 pts over its average, on the list without a buy.

Security software. CrowdStrike (CRWD) 252.13, Cloudflare (NET) 349.02, Rubrik (RBRK) 109.55, all down 3% Friday with software. First pullbacks in leaders are buys. The spots: CRWD 230, NET 317.

Life-science tools. Thermo Fisher (TMO) 675, Revvity (RVTY) 151.11, IQVIA (IQV) 270.37, all within 3% of highs. The spots: TMO 633, RVTY 135.

The 2 platforms. Meta (META) 751.66 after a 3.3% Friday drop on capex scrutiny; the spot is 661, not here. Microsoft (MSFT) 516.17; the spot is 500.

Equal-weight tech (RSPT). 66.38, held 63.50; the spot moves up to 64.65. Tech and the index long are the same bet; size one, not both.

What’s working, and what isn’t

Earnings are why the leaders keep working: third-quarter estimates rose 1.3% during the quarter when they usually fall 2%, and the forward multiple is 19.2, under its 5-year average. Earnings went up and the price of them went down, which is why a dip in a leader is a buy, not a warning.

A book built on the leaders plus a short-bond hedge has paid for a month: tech (XLK) +8.6%, semis +9.4%, the long bond fund (TLT) -4.7%. Long the leaders, short duration, is the construction that’s working, and by the Goldman read it’s what the big hedge funds are running.

A book built on the broadening hasn’t: equal-weight -4.6% on the month, small caps -5.6%, utilities -8.8%, materials -7.1%, gold -7%, XLF still under the 56.85 it needed. Anything that needs the 10-year to come down is losing. Health care (XLV) is the one dip-buy outside tech that held its line, 170.70 over 166; hold it. The refiners led the summer and don’t anymore, VLO and MPC 6% off in a week with crude at $92. They stay cut.

The week

Two branches for Friday, and the second-level read. Soft payrolls, under 100k with unemployment at 4.2% or worse, pull the October hike out of the price and that’s the close over 7,837; the tell is the 2-year under 4.85%. Hot, 150k or better, puts the 10-year at 5.25% and that’s the close under 7,767; the tell is utilities and small caps leading down. The part that trips people up: bad news for the economy is good news for the coil this week, because the market is trading the Fed, not the economy. Either way, semis against 594 confirm.

Wednesday. Quarter-end is mechanical: pensions rebalance out of a quarter where stocks beat bonds, so the last hour can sell for reasons that have nothing to do with the tape, and buybacks stay in blackout until mid-October. A quarter-end dip into 7,767 is the same add as any other, not news. Micron is the first big AI-hardware print since the market started auditing capex; a beat with a raise keeps the leaders’ bucket open, a guide-down closes it.

Past this week, each event is a vote on one of our 2 theses: rates cap the multiple but don’t end the trend, and AI capex keeps the leaders leading. Oct 5 ISM services and Oct 14 CPI vote on the first. A hot print doesn’t hurt because the economy is strong; it hurts because it pushes the 10-year toward 5.25% and makes the October hike certain, and the selling shows up in the leaders first because that’s where the gains are. Oct 7 Fed minutes: the more dissent on the hike, the more room the coil has. Bank earnings from mid-October are the rates vote in reverse: banks earn at these yields, so if XLF can’t clear 56.85 on good numbers, stop waiting for the broadening this quarter. Oct 16 is monthly expiration, where the dealer cushion resets; pins tend to break the week after.

Oct 27-28 is the Fed, and it only moves us if December’s guidance changes; big-tech capex prints land right after, and that’s the capex vote in full. Government funding runs through Dec 11, so Sep 30 isn’t a shutdown risk. Seasonally the 2 weeks after this one were up 7 of 10 with a median gain of 1.4%; if Thursday’s dip was the September drip, early October is where the turn starts.

Iran. Trump rejected Iran’s Hormuz offer this weekend but said more talks are coming. Crude is $92, down from $110. Re-checked Monday morning before this goes out.

The close

Long, half size, the starter from 7,707 on and up 98. The add is a touch of 7,767 to 7,780 in the day session, not on the overnight gap. Over 7,837 held is the upgrade to 7,875 and 7,887. Monday did the week’s work in one session. ES opened near 7,760, cleared 7,793 by late morning and tagged 7,840 by mid-afternoon. Then it stopped. Sellers met it there every session after, with the high at 7,848.50 on Tuesday, and the index went nowhere for a day and a half.

Wednesday’s PMIs broke the stalemate. The composite came in at 58.4, the strongest business activity in about 5 years. With the Fed a week past a hike and one more penciled in, strong data is a rates problem. A hot economy keeps the Fed hiking, higher yields make future earnings worth less today, and the expensive growth names feel it first. The 10-year closed at 5.11%, the highest since 2007, and the 5-year touched 5% for the first time since 2007. The 2-year rose 12bp to 4.90%. The S&P fell 0.7% to 7,706, the Nasdaq 1.1% and the Russell 1.6%. ES closed at 7,772.25, 76 pts off the high and back under 7,793, the top of the old range.

We held the long for the upper target, as Sunday laid out, and reduced at 7,840. From Thursday’s 7,707.25 close that’s about 133 pts on the starter. What’s left is small, and the market is back in the range it spent most of September in.

VIX closed at 15.18 with the October future at 17.65. The gap narrowed to 2.5 pts from 3.2 Sunday, and it narrowed because spot came up, not because October came in. The risk is still priced for next month.

The Fed hiked a quarter point Wednesday, 12 to 0, and said one more is coming this year. The S&P fell to a six-week low on the press conference, then made all of it back in two sessions and closed the week at 7,650.50, up a touch. A market that absorbs its first hike in three years inside two days isn’t a broken market. It also hasn’t proven anything yet. The bounce came on volume that fell every day it rose.

The volatility market moved the risk out a month. The VIX closed at 14.8. The October VIX future closed at 18.0. That gap, 3.2 points, is the widest in our captures going back to the start of last year. The front week is priced calm and October is priced for trouble. Our own eight years of this calendar say the same thing in price: the back half of September is the soft patch, the first half of October is where it turns. The options market and the calendar agree, which happens less often than you’d think.

Underneath the index, one stock in five is holding its short-term trend and half are above the 200-day. Health care was the only group that got healthier last week. Energy, the leader since June, gave back a third of its participation with crude still at $100. The passive bid we track from institutional flow printed the highest reading in the history of our file on Friday. Big money is buying a market most stocks aren’t confirming. One of those two is going to give.

Last week’s published lean lost. The map called the break and the low. The lean was on the wrong side of the turn. Both are in the scorecard below, in full.

The plan that comes out of all this is short to say: long, small, and it has to earn the right to get bigger. One close does that. One close takes it away.

The S&P closed down 0.5% at 7,551. The Dow lost 1.2% and the Nasdaq finished flat, so tech held the index while everything tied to rates took the hit. The dollar jumped and the 10-year sat right around 5%. Crude slipped 3% to about $102. Retail sales came in at +1.2% for the month against +0.7% expected, which is the kind of number a Fed that’s still hiking doesn’t want to see.

September ES closed under 7,600 on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. That’s the downgrade. From here every price is on the December contract, which trades about 68 points above September. We should have made the switch on Sunday. We’re making it now.

Five things worth knowing about this market before Wednesday.

The 10-year yield touched 4.98% on Friday, its highest since 2023, and the S&P closed the week 1.7% off its high. Yields at a three-year high and stocks that close to their high don’t usually sit together for long. One of them is wrong. You’ll know which by Wednesday.

Crude is up 23% in a month and over $100. Energy is the only group where most stocks are in an uptrend: 7 in 10 energy names are above their own trend line, against 1 in 6 industrials. The index looks calm because the biggest names are holding it up. Underneath, barely a quarter of the S&P 500 is trending higher.

The market is leaning toward a rate hike Wednesday, and the volatility market hasn’t marked it. The VIX closed at 15.8 and the futures curve shows no bump at all for the Fed meeting. Either the market is sure about the outcome, or the September VIX contract expiring that same morning is hiding it.

Friday’s ES volume was the largest in months, and a good part of that was the roll into December rather than a change of heart. Don’t read the volume bar as capitulation. Nothing in the fear gauges moved. Not one.

Sunday night futures opened 50 points under Friday’s settle on no news I can point to. A Sunday print doesn’t change a plan. A daily close does, and the two closes that matter this week are below the line.

The drip under the pivot has a reason, and it isn’t September and it isn’t fear. Crude’s up better than 13% in a month, Brent crossed $100 for the first time since July, and the futures market now leans toward the Fed hiking on the 16th instead of holding. That’s a repricing of the path, not a growth scare, and it explains why the index can bleed for two sessions while credit sits near the best readings of the year and the index still holds 6.8% above its 200-day trend.

Underneath it, the shape hasn’t changed. This is the fourth straight week of lower highs into a low that keeps getting tested in the same place, and the tightest weekly range of the four. You’ve been looking at it every week.

The part that should bother you: the volatility market hasn’t marked any of it. Volatility’s at 16.46 with the curve in healthy contango and the front month a point over spot. That’s a market that expects this to end at the inflation print.

We publish two things, and both can be proven wrong by Friday.

The Lie is a score. How confident are we this week, and how much should be at risk?

The levels are five to seven prices, written down before the week starts. Each has a job. Price down to 7,400 is where we buy. A close below 7,374 and we’re out.

The following Sunday we go back and mark both, including the weeks they went against us. This post is that record from the first week we kept it.

If you don’t trade: this is about ES, the futures contract that tracks the S&P 500. It’s how professionals trade the index itself. When you see 7,722.00, that’s the S&P quoted the way a trading desk sees it.

The market it happened in

ES started April at 6,681.00 and settled at 7,722.00 on September 4. Up 15.58%.

That sounds like a year-long climb. It wasn’t.

April alone did +9.36% of it, and since July 1 the index has managed 2.37% in nine weeks while up days ran 59 out of 108, which is the kind of split you’d get flipping a coin with a very slight thumb on it. The range tells the story better than the return anyway. A typical week this year covered about 170 points high to low, and the last four averaged 136. The market’s swinging inside a box and the box keeps shrinking.

Ranges like that punish guessing. So the prices go out before the week does.

The Lie

Five separate checks on what’s happening underneath the index, combined into one number. The scale runs −5 to +5. It’s never printed outside −4 to +3.

One rule makes it useful: the score sets how much, not which way.

A −2 doesn’t mean bet on a decline. It means bet less. Direction comes from the levels. Most confidence indicators get this backwards, turn into a permanent bear call, and are eventually right once after being wrong for two years.

Forty-six scores since April 6. Every one published before the week traded.

Why five checks

One indicator always tells a clean story. The disagreements are where the work is, and they’re most weeks.

May 3, with the market rallying:

“Selling exhaustion confirmed. Institutional positioning improving. But breadth scored zero. Until the average stock starts pulling its weight, rallies into prior highs will get faded.”

Most of the checks were fine.

One wasn’t. The recovery was real and the big money was buying, but the number of companies actually participating had gone flat. That doesn’t say sell. It says the rally’s thinner than the headline, so pushes into old highs should fail. They did.

When it worked

May 31, after the score dropped three points in a week:

“Everything looks perfect on the surface. We’ve seen this before.”

Five days later ES fell 200 points in a session, the worst day of the year. The score moved before price did.

When it didn’t

July 12. This is the expensive kind, because the mistake was in how we did it:

“The miss was the score itself: we held a constructive call on judgment while the model said neutral, and the bond market took it back within three days. The model was right.”

The math said neutral. We felt better than neutral and published the better number. Three days later the market sided with the math.

That week, overriding the score by feel stopped being allowed. The published score is whatever the model says, and it moves only on a written condition. That’s what a miss is supposed to buy you.

It’s early and we’d rather say so

Forty-six readings isn’t much. The Lie is a young model we’re adapting against live data, and you should hear that from us.

We test it as the record grows. When a piece of it doesn’t hold up we change what we claim instead of quietly continuing to claim it. That’s already happened once, and it’s why the score is described as a size dial.

The sample is small and all of it comes from a rising market. None of this has met a bad year yet.

What’s below is real and unedited. It’s also five months old. Ask us again after a bad year.

Everything feeds it

The score is one output. The work behind it is wider, because drawing a price takes more than a sentiment reading.

Bonds and credit, where trouble shows up first. Breadth, to see how many companies are carrying the index. Earnings, read for the reaction more than the number. Where the big institutions are positioned. Options positioning, useful for one narrow thing: knowing when the market’s being pinned inside a range by hedging flows that have nothing to do with what anybody thinks. Chart structure. Central bank liquidity. The economic calendar. Policy risk.

“The bond market already answered ... Credit spreads still tight but rates are screaming something equities haven’t heard yet. PTJ’s first rule: when bonds and stocks disagree, listen to the bonds.”

Nothing in there gets to override the rest on its own. Every piece produces a written brief, the briefs feed the engines behind the score and the prices, and automated checks run before any of it publishes. That loop hasn’t skipped a week since April.

The levels

Five to seven prices a week, written down Sunday before anything happens.

The grading rule matters more than the hit rate. A level only counts if the market actually reaches it. Publish a buy price the market never falls to and you haven’t been right about anything. Plenty of forecasters quietly bank the ones that never traded.

When they worked

April 12. Companies were raising earnings forecasts and the market wasn’t going up.

“Either estimates are wrong or price is wrong. Given the positioning stack, the bet here is that price catches up.”

Both couldn’t be true. Either those companies were about to disappoint or the market was too cheap, and we took the second. The buy price went out at 6,792 to 6,814. Monday opened at 6,784. By April 30 it was 7,306.

The following week’s note covered the part that decides whether you survive, which is where you admit you’re wrong:

“Size is the free variable. The level isn’t.”

Put the exit where a break actually means something. If that makes the risk too big, buy less. Never slide the stop closer because the number looks better that way. More accounts die from moved stops than from bad entries.

When they didn’t

August 9. The market opened Monday far above Friday’s close and never came back.

“The miss is worth more than the hits. The framework’s own fine print says downside odds struck off Friday’s close die in a gap, and Monday’s gap killed them all.”

Every buy price sat below the market and the market jumped all of them overnight. Nothing about the read was wrong. It just never got a chance to be right, and a reader is out the same either way. Redrawing after a gap like that is an automatic step now.

June 28 was the worst week on this measure. Of the four prices the market actually reached, three failed. We led that Sunday’s note with it.

The asterisk

A record like 33 of 38 deserves the conditions it was earned in.

Of these 108 trading days, twenty-one moved more than 1%. Two moved more than 2%. That’s a calm market by any historical standard, and calm markets flatter this kind of work. Ranges hold. A score has room to be roughly right without getting punished for it.

The one time it wasn’t calm the framework was already leaning back, with the score at −2 on May 31 and the market down 200 points on June 5. That’s one week.

The open question is how any of it behaves when the swings last a month instead of an afternoon, and we won’t know until it happens. When it does, the record gets harder. It also gets graded on the same schedule, in the same place, with the same willingness to print the bad weeks.

Why it’s graded this carefully

Trading infrastructure is nearly free now. Anyone can get data and place an order.

Knowing how much to risk still isn’t, and every serious way of sizing a position ends up needing the same input you can’t buy from anybody: your own accuracy, measured on your own calls, using the exits you actually took rather than the ones you’d describe afterward.

You can’t compute that from a track record nobody wrote down.

So the graded record is the thing we’re building. The letter is where it gets published.

Nothing here is investment advice. Futures and options carry substantial risk of loss.

Both conditions we published for the week before the holiday were met, once each, and both reversed the next session. The score held at minus one and a half through both. The week settled at 7,722.00, the same print as the Friday before, to the tick. Holding was right.

Two rules change because of it. A score now needs two closes, or one close with room to spare that survives the next session, before it moves. And any entry that turns on with a close now carries a maximum fill price, because the midweek idea turned on at a close that had already run past both of its targets. That idea is void.

The Lie moves to 0 NEUTRAL, up from minus one and a half. Both closes reversed, the downside never held, and the institutional read turned. Zero isn’t a forecast. It sets how hard we lean, and zero means we don’t.

The read in one line. The swing low has held in an uptrend, twice. Until it breaks on volume, the week is tactical: a channel with an upward lean, traded at the edges, into the Fed on the 16th, the Bank of Japan on the 17th, the buyback blackout, and an IPO calendar that includes an Anthropic listing when it files.

Why the index is priced from both sides. Retail option traders are complacent: the equity put/call is 0.58, well under the line where hedging stops. Professionals are the opposite: more than three puts for every call on the futures chain, and hedge fund net exposure at its lowest in a year (sell-side prime data). When the sellers have already hedged, a bad headline finds no seller. When the unhedged group is retail, the first red session is fast and the recovery faster. A week with a strait attack, a global bond selloff and a payroll beat went nowhere.

What the last few weeks bought us. Eight of the thirteen levels we published were tested and all eight behaved as drawn, fourteen weeks running. The midweek call that the first support under the pivot would hold as Friday’s payroll floor held to within eight points. The score stayed put through two false breaks and was right both times. The three Sunday passes were right too. The rules did the work: quarter size set by participation, no pre-set orders at the edges, out on a close and never on a wick.

Two tankers were hit in the strait Tuesday, crude went back toward $90, the bond market sold off, and ES closed at 7,642.75, through the bottom of the range with room to spare. Wednesday it traded 7,618.50, three points under Tuesday’s low, and then a soft ADP number landed and the market read it the old way. Small caps led, the 10-year backed off a 4.81% print that was its highest since 2023, and the index closed at 7,676.50, back inside the range it had left the night before.

So the week has done both things Sunday said it might, in order, inside two sessions. It hasn’t done the one thing that would have changed our size.

We priced a week that could reach 7,591 or 7,791. It got within nine points of the top and never went looking for the bottom. You pay for both sides and you only ever get one.

The Lie moves to -1.5, up from minus two and a half after three straight prints there. That’s the first improvement in three weeks, and it happened in a week the tape got heavier, not lighter. The score isn’t a forecast. It sets how hard we lean, and minus one and a half means we stay small.

An option chain doesn’t predict direction. It prices a distance, and it charges you the same whichever way you go. So when a week uses only one half of what it sold you, the other half was money spent on a move that never came.

That gap between what’s priced and what shows up is the whole week ahead, and it isn’t only in the option chain.

Earnings just delivered the biggest positive surprise since anyone started tracking it, on the best beat rate in five years, with margins at a record. The reward was 0.6% on the average beat, against a norm closer to 1%. The largest company on earth beat every line, guided above the street while supply constrained, and couldn’t hold the breakout.

So the news was good and nobody paid for it.

The process runs the same seven days every week. Levels published Sunday before the market can grade them, graded Wednesday and Friday in public, models rebuilt from the grades. Everything below gets graded next Sunday, whichever way it goes.

CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP) is that stock right now. For twelve months it chopped inside a wide range while the market decided gene editing was a science project with a burn rate. Then last week it broke out on the heaviest volume of the year, followed through, and pulled back on almost no volume at all. That pattern — heavy up, light down — is the one we look for. It usually means large hands bought and nobody is in a hurry to sell to them.

The reason is simple enough to say in one sentence: the first product is finally selling, the company has more cash than it can spend before this trade expires, and tomorrow it presents data on the drug that decides what this company is in five years.

Meanwhile roughly a fifth of the float is short on a thesis that just stopped being true. Sell-side targets have only moved one direction since February. And retail, which was extremely bearish a month ago, is only just starting to notice.

If you followed Sunday, you haven’t made an index trade this week. ES has spent three sessions inside an 86-pt range without a close through a price that matters.

That’s the setup into Friday, when the new Fed chair’s first Jackson Hole keynote and the government’s revision of a year of payroll data land in the same minute.

Wednesday gave us four beats and four raises. NVDA turned higher during the call, software ran with it, and the rest of the market barely joined. The money moved within tech without spreading through the market.

Friday is different. The new Fed chair speaks at the same minute the government revises a year of payroll data. The market is still charging quiet-week prices for it.
